Sculpting the Head

Since the head of the Tauntaun is one of three parts of the creature that is not covered with fur (the other two are the hands and feet) and is the most detailed part, I decided to start with it first. Because this project was about creating a collectors piece I wanted to make my replica as durable as possible so as not to have to worry about losing the more detailed parts of the puppet with deterioration due to aging with time and physically handling it. I started by using super sculpey and formed the head directly onto the armature. The finished head sculpt took about 2 weeks to complete. I then baked it with a heat gun to harden it and then made a silicone mold of it so as to cast a resin duplicate. I then replaced the sculpey head with the resin copy to be used as the final head for the puppet.
